HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RED WINE
Appellation of origin, bottle maturation, varieties, the stories they tell, the identities that speak to us… So many wines and so many reasons to lose ourselves amid tannins and oak aromas. There is something for everyone, from legendary wines renowned for their quality to innovative wines that paradoxically take us back to the past.
Mas la Plana (DO Penedès)
A treat for well-versed wine lovers who can appreciate the evolution of a red that transcended its time. More than a few studies have shown that sharing a bottle of wine expands and accentuates our interpersonal relations. It encourages conversation and discussion.
And so, an otherwise quotidian dinner for two can transform into a very special night. Mas la Plana, after all, has many stories to tell.
Iconic, classic, anthological… Mas la Plana is the undisputed paradigm of exceptional Penedès reds whose elegant label has graced the most important tables in the world.
Mas La Plana (DO Penedès
Mas la Plana’s provenance is evident in its expression and structure; unmistakable in the quality and richness of its fruity, fleshy tannins; and perceivable in the intense varietal notes derived from its vineyard’s microclimate, offering a deep, captivating nose of Mediterranean woodland, blueberries, and blackberries.
Eighteen months of French oak ageing complete and refine the quality of the tannins, giving the wine that distinctive elegant delight evocative of spices, chocolate, and coffee. In the mouth, the wine has great length, providing a second act for its ripe, fruity tannins, wrapped in velvety, mouthfilling sensations, elegantly expansive and voluminous in a way that seems seamless, gliding across the palate naturally, organically.
Clos Ancestral Tinto (DO Penedès)
Staying in our beloved Penedès, we now turn to Clos Ancestral Tinto, which expresses Familia Torres’s commitment to the recovery of the region’s long-forgotten ancestral varieties. The wine marks the return of Moneu and transforms ampelographic archaeology into a humanist effort that helps sustain our regional identity, revealing who we were and who we are.
The ancestral Moneu variety in Penedès
This is a wine for anyone seeking an almost atavistic style, for stalwart humanists and sophisticated hedonists – Clos Ancestral Tinto can preside over tables at the most respected restaurants and champion the story of how recovering our ancestral culture lays the foundations for building a future in the shadow of climate change. After all, the varieties recovered by Familia Torres are not only oenologically exceptional but have shown greater resistance and adaptability to drought conditions.
The immediate surroundings of Castell de la Bleda, the birthplace of Clos Ancestral Tinto, have witnessed more than 2000 years of winegrowing. Archaeological digs have unearthed Iberian, Roman, medieval, and pre-phylloxera vestiges that point to the cultivation of grapes like Moneu in the past – a variety that has been brought back from oblivion to be integrated into the blend of a new wine born from organic viticultural practices.
To the eye, it displays medium intensity, with a lovely garnet colour and cherry highlights. The nose is fragrant and seductive, with rich floral and fruit aromas that oscillate between wild roses and raspberries. Supple, light, smooth on the palate, with a pleasant, very sensual texture that eschews potency in favour of exquisite acidity and an unusual, unmistakable personality.

Purgatori (DO Costers del Segre)
The juxtaposition of prayer and labour inherent in the vocation and monastic life of the Benedictine Order translated into the establishment of many vineyards and wineries with the purpose of supplying the community with wine, both for consumption and liturgy. Any surplus wine was sold to nearby towns and villages, thereby establishing a relationship to the vine that, over time, would grow into a new winemaking culture richer in knowledge and techniques.
Purgatori (DO Costers del Segre)
The Purgatori winery in the DO Costers del Segre appellation of origin is a tangible testament to the Benedictine Order’s time in the region. The eponymous wine is made in the old dining hall of the former monastic estate and represents Familia Torres’s first venture in the appellation of origin.
The monastic legacy infuses the cultural and historical heritage of the region, reflected in its wines, as well as in the vast Romanesque riches of its churches whose capitals and murals are embellished with grapevine motifs. An ensemble comprising a chapel and eight churches (Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Climent, and others) offers the finest representation of the Catalan Romanesque style, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
Cloaked in dark cherry red, Purgatori is a blend of three varieties (Cariñena, Syrah, and Garnacha Tinta) that reveals the particular characteristics of its geoclimatic conditions. The result is elegantly complex, offering a nose laden with myriad ripe black fruit, primarily blackberries and blueberries, melding with subtle smoky and lactic notes to create an organoleptic celebration. Bringing everything into careful balance is a weft of fine tannins that support a long, round evolution on the palate.
This is a wine made for contemplation and enjoyment. Perfect for introspective moments alone or a shared celebration of our culture. History and legacy in a bottle.
Celeste Crianza (DO Ribera del Duero)
A wine that aims for the stars. A wine that calls for evening hours in the great outdoors. An improvised picnic, a terrace with a view, the sky as a canvas.
The Tinto Fino grapes grown in Pago del Cielo, at almost 900 metres, have adapted to the region’s extreme temperatures, acquiring a distinctive personality that doesn’t require varietal blends.
This is why Celeste Crianza is a varietal soloist, completing its profile with nothing but an oak caress. The result is a wine of great depth of colour, deep cherry red and golden garnet. Big, fleshy, flavourful, and curvy. Very ripe black fruit emerge from layers of toasty, coffee, and dried fruit notes. Wine at its most sensual and seductive.
Water, sky, earth, and history comprise a virtuous circle in which our culture and human experience have acquired the ability to shape, listen, and respect, transforming grapes into wine and making the sky our home.

Malpastor (DOCa Rioja)
Malpastor takes us back to the first shepherds who dedicated themselves to winegrowing, often abandoning their flocks in the process. These adventurous pioneers were often referred to as “malos pastores” or “bad shepherds”.
Their namesake wine exemplifies modern Riojas: typicity at the forefront of contemporary winemaking. This hand-harvested Tempranillo varietal originates from vineyards that are between 20 and 25 years old, planted on gentle hills and small limestone terraces. In terms of winemaking, Malpastor remains on its lees for a month in concrete tanks and three months in French and American oak, where it continues to age for a total of 12 months. The wine then matures in the bottle for a minimum of six months, acquiring finesse and that velvety, silky sensation on the palate.
The resulting wine is intense and fragrant, with exquisite fruit and spicy aromas and notes reminiscent of toasted bread. The tannins are velvety and juicy, subtly shaped by oak ageing. Mature on the palate with good body and acidity; round and full.
Malpastor is an elegant wine that unites typicity and modernity, bringing varietal fruit and subtle oak together in perfect harmony. A modern Rioja that brightens any after-work drinks.
