Purgatori
MADE ON EARTH, DESIRED IN HEAVEN
Purgatori is a testament to the presence of Benedictine monks in a land that to them represented penance and discovery: an extreme climate and a special terroir for a superior wine. In 1770, the Abbey of Montserrat ordered an estate to be built at L’Aranyó, an inhospitable site far from the monastery, in an area known for its extreme climate and harsh living conditions. This is where disobedient friars were sent, who would do their penance by working the land. What they discovered was a terroir with great potential for making an exceptional wine. Legend has it that large barrels would mysteriously disappear. Some said that angels took them to heaven. Since 2012, we have been carrying on the monks’ legacy by making a fresh, elegant wine full of personality.

Purgatori is a historic estate in the heart of Les Garrigues (Lleida) that has outstanding conditions for winegrowing. Across 200 hectares of organic vineyards standing at three different altitudes, the native varieties grown here ripen slowly and regularly thanks to the continental climate, the difference between day and night temperatures, and the characteristics of the soils: predominantly loamy, poor, and deep, well-drained and with a high calcium carbonate content.
DO Costers del Segre
The DO Costers del Segre is a mosaic made up of seven areas spread across the entire Segre River basin and Lleida Pyrenees. The aim of the appellation of origin (DO) is to bring together the winegrowing in the province of Lleida under this designation and give it its own identity. The main factors responsible for the uniqueness of the wines in this appellation and that make the region an ideal place for winegrowing, are its continental climate, with intense temperature fluctuations between seasons and day and night; its excellent location; and the composition of its soils.
