Familia Torres Red Wines: The Essential Classics

Within the international wine world, Familia Torres has shown a talent for communicating the identity of their wines and garnering international prestige. 

For advanced wine lovers, delving into the winery’s collection is synonymous with exploring the maximum expression of oenological diversity. Three identities, three inimitable wines: Mas La Plana, Perpetual, and Grans Muralles.

Mas La Plana (DO Penedès)

  • The legend that put Penedès on the global map. Born on the Pacs del Penedès estate, Mas La Plana is a flagship wine of contemporary Spanish viticulture. 

  • Conceived by Miguel A. Torres in the late 1960s in defiance of local tradition, this Cabernet Sauvignon varietal made its debut with the 1970 vintage under the name Gran Coronas Etiqueta Negra. The wine cemented its place in history during the Wine Olympics in Paris in 1979 (organized by Gault & Millau), where it defeated some of the world’s most revered Bordeaux's, marking a before and after in the perception of Spanish wine.

Tasting Not

  • In the glass, the wine displays an incredibly deep, dense ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose unfolds in complex layers: initial notes of black currant, fresh blueberries and cassis, give way to balsamic nuances of eucalyptus, mint, and tobacco leaf.

As the wine breathes in the glass, it reveals echoes of cedarwood, graphite, black pepper, and sweet spices imparted by ageing in French oak.

  • The palate offers an unforgettably Mediterranean-style structure: silky entry, fine yet firm tannins, and lively acidity that carries through to the long finish, marked by notes of bitter cocoa and woodland undergrowth.

Cellaring Potentia

  • With its solid tannin structure and balanced acidity, Mas La Plana is exceptionally age-worthy and can easily be cellared for 15 to 20 years, even longer in the case of extraordinary vintages.
  • A wine that adds distinction to a meal, Christmas celebrations or sophisticated formal dinners.

Perpetual (DOQ Priorat)

  • Perpetual originates in the heart of Priorat as a homage to the region’s heroic viticulture and the tenacity and time-honoured wisdom of local winegrowers.  The wine pays tribute to the old vines of Cariñena and Garnacha grown on steep llicorella slopes at considerable elevations.

Tasting Not

  • Exquisitely elegant dark cherry red hue with a violet edge.  The aromatic profile is complex yet reveals an unmistakable identity.  With subtle mineral accents, where damp slate and graphite intermingle with concentrated ripe black fruit (blackberry, dried plum, blueberry jam).

  • The Mediterranean profile unfolds with elegant floral nuances of violets, accompanied by rosemary and thyme, culminating in notes of beautifully integrated toast. 

The palate is impressive, glyceric, and fleshy, with a backbone of very fresh acidity that balances the alcohol concentration typical of the region’s finest wines.

Cellaring Potentia

  • A red wine made to last, both in physical form and in memory. It will maintain its fullness and elegance for 12 to 18 years. 

  • A wine endowed with the perfect character to impress seasoned palates, ideal for winter banquets of all kinds, and celebrations that turn the pursuit of pleasure into an experience. 
     

Grans Muralles (DO Conca de Barberà)

  • In Grans Muralles, history and the recovery of an ampelographic heritage converge. Introduced in the late 20th century, Grans Muralles is named after the historical walls of the Poblet monastery that protect the vineyards.

What makes this wine unique is its composition: a blend of traditional varieties like Garnacha and Cariñena and ancestral varieties recovered by Familia Torres after decades of research, most notably Querol and Garró.

Tasting Note

  • In appearance, the wine displays a deep, brilliant garnet colour, mesmerizing in its beauty. The nose offers an incomparable range of aromas of almost noble elegance: notes of ripe red forest fruit, raspberry and red currant intermingle with spicy nuances of clove, sweet paprika, and pink pepper. Remarkable echoes of Mediterranean woodland undergrowth, bay leaf, and mineral slate nuances.

Round in the mouth, it envelops and captivates the palate in fleshy, velvety sensations. Immense textural complexity with sweet, impeccably polished tannins. The finish is persistent, spicy, almost eternal. 

Cellaring Potentia

  • This very age-worthy wine has a drinking window of 15 to 25 years.

  • An excellent choice for the most exclusive evenings of the year,  the wine seems to demand black-tie elegance.
