Familia Torres has celebrated the ninth edition of the Torres & Earth Awards, recognising outstanding climate action and environmental commitment. Each year, these awards honour suppliers, territories, and communicators who demonstrate determination in addressing the climate emergency and contribute to minimising its impact.
The ceremony, presented by environmental communicator José Luis Gallego, took place on Wednesday, 5 November, at the InterContinental Barcelona Hotel. Miguel A. Torres, President of Familia Torres, personally presented the six awards, named after the environmental programme launched by the winery in 2008 to adapt to global warming and reduce its carbon footprint.
Recognition Across the Value Chain
This year, the four awarded suppliers represent the entire value chain of Familia Torres, from grape production to auxiliary materials and logistics. Terra Alta (Tarragona) winegrower Miquel González was honoured for implementing effective measures to reduce environmental impact, ensuring the viability of his wine project, and proactively adapting to the challenges posed by climate change.
IPE Industria Gráfica, the label supplier represented by Managing Director Francesc Egea, received the award for its commitment to circular economy initiatives and eco-design, as well as for achieving sustainability certifications and calculating its carbon footprint.
In the logistics category, European distributors Walraven Sax (Netherlands), represented by Director Bart Gijtenbeek, and Wein Wolf (Germany), represented by Commercial Director Khalid Wolff, were recognised for being the first to adopt the intermodal rail system promoted by Familia Torres, which enables a reduction of 30% to 40% in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transport of wines and spirits across Europe.
Champions of Climate Action
The Torres & Earth 2025 Award for Territory was presented to the Secretariat of Federations and Associations for Forest Defence of Catalonia (SFADF), represented by Secretary Joan Trenchs, in recognition of its exemplary work in forest fire prevention and the protection of natural heritage, coordinating hundreds of volunteers and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
Environmental activist Carlota Bruna received the Torres & Earth 2025 Award for Environmental Awareness for her tireless efforts to raise awareness about environmental issues, her campaign against plastic use, and her ability to mobilise and inspire society in pursuit of a more sustainable future.
Miguel A. Torres expressed his gratitude to the awardees for their dedication and environmental commitment: “The urgency to act is greater than ever. I am convinced that we can make wine a symbol of resilience and responsibility in the face of climate change, by joining forces and embracing innovation. I congratulate the awardees for their determination and perseverance in driving positive change and for serving as an inspiring example to many of us.”
The Torres & Earth Awards were established in 2017 to recognise and highlight suppliers who significantly reduce their emissions, thereby helping to lower the winery’s overall carbon footprint, as suppliers account for nearly 90% of its total emissions. Since 2019, the awards have expanded to also honour territories or organisations that promote environmental initiatives, as well as communicators who help raise public awareness about the climate emergency.
