Mas La Plana 2020, Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence

01 October 2026

Familia Torres proudly announces the release of the 2020 vintage of Mas La Plana, a wine that celebrates 50 years of history and excellence. This iconic Cabernet Sauvignon, first crafted in 1970 by Miguel A. Torres (a member of the fourth generation of the Torres family), has become a global benchmark for premium wines, synonymous with quality, origin, and innovation. With this new release in UK, the 2020 vintage promises to captivate wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Mas La Plana was the first single-vineyard wine that Miguel A. Torres created when joining the family business in the 1960s. He was the first, together with Jean Leon, to introduce Cabernet Sauvignon in Penedès, the birthplace of the Torres family. Since then, the vines have adapted beautifully and reached a remarkable balance, reflecting the full potential of the terroir.

Mas La Plana’s journey began with bold ambition. In 1979, the wine gained international acclaim by triumphing over the world’s finest Cabernets at the Gault & Millau Wine Olympics in Paris, earning the gold medal and establishing its place among the elite. Today, the 2020 vintage continues this legacy of excellence, having been awarded 95 points at Decanter World Wine Awards 2026, a gold medal at The Global Cabernet Sauvignon Masters 2026 (The Drinks Business), and 94 points from Wine Spectator, among others. This continued recognition reinforces Mas La Plana’s status as a legend in the world of fine wines.

“Fifty years have now passed since the first vintage of Mas La Plana, a wine that marked a turning point in the history and strategic direction of our winery. At that time, I chose to challenge prevailing conventions and take a different approach to craft the best wine possible. Today, time has proven that taking risks, persevering, and innovating was the right decision”, states Miguel A. Torres, 4th generation.

Nestled in the heart of Penedès, the historic Mas La Plana estate spans 29 hectares of certified organic and regenerative vineyards. The combination of rich, loamy soils, well-draining marlstone, and a Mediterranean climate create the perfect environment for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines, planted from 1964 to 1979, have adapted seamlessly to these conditions, producing grapes that reflect the full potential of the terroir. Thanks to the remarkable adaptation and balance of these old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, Mas La Plana has continued to evolve, reaching its fullest expression and solidifying its place as a benchmark in the world of fine wines.

Mas La Plana is more than just a wine; it is a symbol of Familia Torres’ commitment to innovative and environmentally respectful viticulture. The estate employs regenerative practices that enhance soil fertility, prevent erosion, and promote biodiversity. These efforts not only improve grape quality but also contribute to combating climate change by capturing atmospheric CO2. Today, the vineyard is a thriving ecosystem, showcasing the benefits of innovative and environmentally conscious winegrowing.

The 2020 Vintage: A Celebration of Legacy

The 2020 vintage of Mas La Plana is a testament to 50 years of dedication to excellence. Crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine ages for 18 months in partially new French oak barrels and foudres, and stainless-steel tanks. Each vineyard parcel is hand-harvested at the optimal moment, vinified and aged separately. The final wine is a meticulous blend of small batches of Cabernet Sauvignon, which infuses the wine with remarkable complexity.

In the 2020 vintage, Mas La Plana experienced a relatively dry and mild winter followed by a rainy, warm spring that built up excellent water reserves in the soils. A dry summer with moderate temperatures and a few short heat spikes accelerated ripening and brought the harvest forward, while late-ripening varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon performed particularly well under these conditions. Intense storms with hail towards the end of August required very careful selection of bunches in the vineyard, resulting in lower yields but a clear focus on quality. As a result, the Mas La Plana 2020 displays vibrant freshness, refreshing acidity and round, silky tannins, clearly reflecting the resilience of the vineyard and the precision in the winery.

Mas La Plana is part of the Antología Miguel Torres Collection, a range of emblematic wines that reflect the pure essence of Familia Torres. This collection represents the harmonious union between nature and the savoir-faire of the winemakers, showcasing the truest expression of their vineyards of origin.
