The 5th Symposium of Regenerative Viticulture delves into the opportunities of this agricultural model in the face of climate change

20 May 2025

The Regenerative Viticulture Association, with the support of the Catalan Wine Cluster INNOVI, organizes the 5th Symposium on Regenerative Viticulture that will take place on Thursday, June 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Vinseum in Vilafranca del Penedès. Exploring techniques, results and opportunities that regenerative agriculture offers in the face of the challenges of climate change will be the central axis of this event, which will be held in person and online and will feature the participation of nine academics and experts in the field.

Mireia Torres, as a founding member of the Association of Regenerative Viticulture and president of INNOVI, will take part in the opening and closing of the symposium, together with Francisco Romero, mayor of the Vilafranca del Penedès City Council, and Joan Gené, general director of the Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine (INCAVI). Eloi Montcada, INNOVI Cluster Manager, will present the event where more than a hundred people are expected to attend in person.

In this new edition of the Symposium of Regenerative Viticulture, entitled "Living vineyards: regenerative strategies for the wine ecosystem", the impact of carbon sequestration on the soil, the current regulations on carbon credits and how these credits are calculated to obtain compensation if sustainable practices are carried out, will be analysed. It will also address how to measure the health of soils and how to improve their fertility and resilience of vineyards. Finally, the results of two research projects that study the impact of regenerative viticulture in which Familia Torres participates will be presented: Regenera.cat, which compares and evaluates conventional and regenerative agriculture under the leadership of the LGAI (Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications), and Vitiregenere, coordinated by INNOVI, which has validated the agronomic practices that contribute to regenerating the health and vitality of soils, included in a guide to good practices in regenerative viticulture that will be given to attendees.

The contest will combine the academic aspect with practical explanation by experts in regenerative viticulture. The academic presentations will be given by Luis López Bellido, PhD in Agricultural Engineering and Professor Emeritus of Agronomy at the University of Cordoba; Salvador Samitier, head of the Cross-cutting Policies and External Action Service of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat of Catalonia; Diana Jiménez de Santiago, an agronomist specialising in soils (soil science) and a PhD in agricultural and food science and technology; Carlos Alberto Torres Guerrero, a biologist with a doctorate in soil sciences, specializing in fertility and sustainable soil management; Isabella Tomasi, agronomist, PhD in microbiology and consultant in agroecology; and Amaia Nogales, PhD in plant biology and researcher at IRTA, specialising in plant biology and plant-microorganism interactions.

Those in charge of presenting the results of the projects will be Sara Marañón Jiménez, PhD in ecology, researcher at CREAF and professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona; Marc Viñas, PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona and researcher in the sustainability program in biosystems of the IRTA, and Felicidad de Herralde Traveria, PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona and researcher in the fruit growing program of the IRTA.

The Regenerative Viticulture Symposium aims to explain the benefits of regenerative viticulture to extend this agricultural model based on recovering soil health and promoting biodiversity to make vineyards more resilient and contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change. The contest will be in Spanish and will be streamed through the viticulturaregenerativa.org websiteThose interested in attending must register through this form.
