Familia Torres makes strides towards decarbonisation, achieving a 40% reduction in its carbon footprint in 2024

03 June 2025

Familia Torres has successfully reduced its CO emissions per bottle by 40% across its entire value chainfrom vineyard to consumerin 2024 compared to 2008, the year the winery first began measuring its carbon footprint. According to the independently audited 2024 report (for Miguel Torres S.A.), this reduction is even more remarkableapproaching 60%when considering only direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2), marking a significant milestone on the path to decarbonisation.

Since 2008, through the implementation of its Torres & Earth climate action plan, Familia Torres has invested over €23 million in adaptation measures, emission reduction initiatives, water management, and reforestation, among other efforts. With the ambitious goal of becoming a Net Zero emissions winery by 2040, a substantial portion of this investment has been dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint, with a particular focus on renewable energy self-generation—the Penedès winery now produces over 50% of its energy needs through photovoltaic panels and a biomass boiler—and the promotion of sustainable mobility, including the use of hybrid and electric vehicles and a solar-powered electric train at its visitor centre.

Among the most innovative solutions implemented in recent years are the capture and reuse of CO generated during wine fermentation, thanks to a pioneering system introduced in 2021; a water regeneration plant, operational since 2016, which enables the reuse of nearly half of the treated process water; and the adoption of regenerative viticulture across more than half of its 1,000 hectares of organic vineyards in Cataloniaa practice that enhances soil quality, vineyard resilience, and the capacity to sequester atmospheric CO.

Recognising the urgent need to address the climate crisis, Familia Torres has redoubled its efforts, leading the transformation of the wine sector towards a more sustainable model. The winery has increased its CO emissions reduction from 30% to 40% in just five yearsa significant achievement. As Miguel A. Torres, President of Familia Torres, states: We cannot afford to stop; we must continue to work with determination and keep our sights firmly set on the ambitious target we have set for the future. The pressing need to act in the face of the climate crisis demands responsibility, commitment, and collaborative effort. I am convinced that wine can become a symbol of resilience in the fight against climate change.”

New Initiatives for 2025

Familia Torres continues to progress towards its decarbonisation objectives with new initiatives, particularly aimed at reducing emissions from its suppliers (scope 3), which account for nearly 90% of the winery’s carbon footprint. The company plans to lower transport-related emissions by promoting rail distribution for its wines across Europe and further reducing bottle weight by adopting the lightest wine bottle on the market, weighing just 300 grams, for selected wines—99% of the bottles used are already classified as lightweight (under 420 grams).

For direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2), the winery will install lithium batteries at its Penedès visitor centre this year to move closer to energy self-sufficiency, continue expanding regenerative viticulture to the remainder of its vineyards in Catalonia, and plant trees to offset part of its emissions using its own resources. Additionally, Familia Torres will participate in research projects aimed at scientifically validating more sustainable solutions in both vineyard and winery, such as the SOLARWINE agrivoltaic project and the VITIBOSC agroforestry initiative.
