[NEW] 62 MILLAS AL CIELO

62 millas

A New Wine from One of the Highest-Altitude Vineyards in Ribera del Duero

Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of Familia Torres’s arrival in Ribera del Duero, Pago del Cielo presents 62 Millas al Cielo, a wine whose character is forged by the altitude of the high plateau of Fompedraza. A Tinto Fino with 9 months of oak-ageing, the wine originates from vineyards growing at 900 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest in DO Ribera del Duero.

62 Millas al Cielo evokes the closeness of the sky. The name “62 miles to the sky” is a reference to the distance between the Earth and the Kármán line, the boundary separating the atmosphere from outer space.

High-Altitude Wines and Vineyards in Fompedraza

  • The combination of elevation and temperature is decisive in determining the grape maturation cycle. Exposed to a greater shift in temperature between diurnal highs and nocturnal lows, the wines take on a distinctive and very particular personality.
  • The concept of a high-altitude vineyard goes beyond the precise above-sea-level elevation. In fact, the changes in climatic conditions brought about by the elevation, and how these affect the resulting wine, are far more significant.

Did you know that for every 100-metre increase in elevation, the temperature drops by an average of 0.65ºC?

  • Temperature shifts provide the right conditions for the optimal development of healthy, balanced, suitable grapes during the growth and maturation periods.  In addition, a sharp contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures encourages a whole world of aromas to emerge and preserves a higher level of acidity in the grapes. It resembles a physiological “autopilot” that triggers the production of sugar during the day and halts it at night when temperatures drop, thereby extending the cycle.

Wines from high-altitude vineyards stand out for their intensity and depth of colour; primary aromas take centre stage in a sea of fresh fruit and bright acidity; the tannins are noticeable, smooth, round, fleshy. This fresh, primary character welcomes the influence of oak, a nine-month union resulting in a quality wine of complexity and sophistication.

62 Millas al Cielo: The Wine

62 Millas al Cielo stands out for its natural freshness. This 100% Tinto Fino varietal is vinified traditionally in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 9 months in American and French oak barrels with a capacity of 300 and 500 litres, respectively.

The result: a wine of remarkable depth of colour, dark cherry red, intense and deep on the nose, displaying rich fruit aromas reminiscent of blackberry jam and notes of spices. The palate is silky, light, and elegant, culminating in a warm, pleasant finish.

Pago del Cielo unveils its new wine with the 2022 vintage, generally a warm, dry year except for the months of the ripening period, which received quite a bit of rain. The wine is aimed primarily at restaurants and specialized stores. Given its aromatic intensity, the wine goes well with a range of recipes, including roast lamb, stews, and casseroles; stuffed aubergines or pasta with tomato sauce, which tend to be difficult to pair successfully.

62 Millas al Cielo aims for the stars but is rooted in an exceptional enclave known for producing some of the country’s finest wines. The kind of wines that let your imagination soar while keeping your feet on the ground.
