The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism has named Catalonia the World Region of Gastronomy 2025 (CRMG25)

  • This recognition underscores the exceptional quality and richness of Catalonia’s food, agricultural, and culinary heritage, consolidating the territory as an international reference.  The distinction is about more than cuisine and highlights Catalonia’s spirit of innovation, connecting its food heritage to values such as sustainability, quality, and social cohesion. It reveals how crucial gastronomy is to Catalonia’s cultural identity and to how it presents itself internationally.

Familia Torres’s decision to join the initiative manifests the work our winery has been doing for decades, taking our expertise and craftsmanship and championing Catalan wines around the world, as well as being the first to lead a movement to mitigate and prevent the threat of climate change (Torres & Earth). At the same time, the winery’s innovation in the wine tourism sector and its active support and collaboration with top-tier restauranteurs makes our involvement a natural fit.

  • An exceptional gastronomic legacy. Catalonia has a unique culinary tradition based on the Mediterranean diet, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO.  Some of the assets that have earned Catalonia this distinction include products with a European designation (Protected Designation of Origin or Protected Geographical Indication), internationally renowned chefs – including the Roca brothers, the Castro-Xatruch-Casañas trio at the restaurant Disfrutar, Carme Ruscalleda, and Ferran and Albert Adrià – and an unwavering commitment to wine tourism and local products.

  • The strategic concepts that define this exciting project articulate a comprehensive vision of the sector as a transformative force that unites tradition and modernity; sustainability and biodiversity; technological innovation and the circular economy; and responsible, sustainable tourism. It is a firm commitment rooted in education and awareness-raising to present ourselves to the world as what we are: a vibrant, responsible, and coherent culture that invests time and resources into actions to transform Catalonia into a model and reference for the transition towards a more humane and responsible economy.  It is also about actively supporting inclusion and social cohesion to make sure the most vulnerable are not left behind.

  • For Familia Torres joining this initiative isn’t merely a formality but reflects a collective commitment to making Catalonia an exemplary reference around the world. It is about joining forces to build a sustainable, innovative, inclusive, and internationally well-connected Catalan gastronomy. We are contributing to the creation of a dynamic, interdisciplinary network in which everyone plays an important role in achieving this goal.

“Catalan gastronomy is a driving force on an economic, cultural, and tourism level that connects the territory, encourages sustainability, and promotes social cohesion from a place of deep respect for its historical legacy and people.”

  • We want to make sure to mention the members who have helped launch this initiative, entities that have contributed their experience, influence, and capacity for innovation. These include institutions, private entities, and professional associations. Notable among them is Fundació Alícia, a research centre dedicated to cooking, health, and nutrition with the aim of using science to promote innovations and actions that enrich our cuisine.

  • elBullifoundation. The foundation helmed by Ferran Adrià is another key entity involved in the CRMG25 project. ElBulli is a longtime international reference in terms of gastronomic creativity and innovation. With his foundation, Adrià consolidated a space dedicated to researching and promoting culinary techniques and ideas that forever changed the world of gastronomy.  His participation in CRMG25 contributes a creative global vision that helps position Catalonia as a top-tier gastronomic destination.

  •  Acadèmia Catalana de Gastronomia i Nutrició. The Catalan Academy of Gastronomy and Nutrition is another influential partner in this project. As an institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Catalan gastronomic heritage, the academy safeguards local culinary traditions while encouraging their modernization and internationalization. It plays a crucial role in CRMG25 in terms of consolidating the gastronomic identity of Catalonia and championing quality, authenticity, and sustainability – values that define Catalan cuisine.
