Miguel A. Torres, President of Familia Torres and a member of the fourth generation of the family, has been honoured by the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya with the Creu de Sant Jordi 2026, in recognition of his career in the wine sector and his decisive contribution to raising the international profile of Catalan wines. The award also highlights his firm commitment to quality, innovation and sustainability, which has established Familia Torres as one of the world’s leading wine producers.
The Creu de Sant Jordi is one of the highest distinctions that can be granted to an individual or organisation within the institutional sphere of Catalonia. The distinction will be officially presented to him on 21 April at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) by the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa.
An oenologist by training, Miguel A. Torres joined the family business in 1962 and has played a key role in the transformation and modernisation of Familia Torres. He introduced advanced oenological techniques and drove the production of great wines from estate-owned vineyards, such as Mas La Plana, Milmanda and Grans Muralles, as well as the recovery of ancestral grape varieties. Under his leadership, the company has consolidated a winegrowing model based on excellence, innovation and sustainability, and he has become a leading figure in contemporary Catalan oenology and in the international projection of the Catalan wine sector.
The Creu de Sant Jordi was already awarded in 1990 to his father, Miguel Torres Carbó, which lends this new distinction a particularly emotional significance for both the family and the winery. In the words of Miguel A. Torres:
“I feel deeply proud to be able to continue the family legacy and to have contributed, from our winery, to promoting the name of Catalonia and its wines around the world. This distinction is also a recognition of my wife, Waltraud, for her constant support, and of my children, Miquel and Mireia, who in recent years have played a decisive role in the success and continuity of the company.”
This year, the Generalitat de Catalunya has awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi to a total of 20 individuals and 10 organisations in recognition of their outstanding service. Created in 1981, these honours acknowledge those people and institutions that have distinguished themselves through their achievements and their civic, cultural, social or economic contribution, strengthening Catalonia’s collective identity and its projection to the wider world.
