On Wednesday, November 27, Familia Torres presented the VIII Torres & Earth Awards in recognition of climate action. The aim of these awards is to distinguish those suppliers of the winery that have implemented measures to significantly reduce their CO2 emissions, as well as territories that promote initiatives in favour of the environment and communicators who help raise awareness of the seriousness of climate change.
This new edition of the Torres & Earth Awards, named in reference to the environmental program that Familia Torres launched in 2008 to adapt to global warming and mitigate its effects, was held at Shôko Barcelona and was chaired by Miguel A. Torres, president of Familia Torres, and presented by the environmental communicator José Luis Gallego.
The awards, in the category of suppliers, have gone to the winegrower from Costers del Segre, Eva Carmona, for recovering high-altitude vineyards and preserving the agroforestry mosaic landscape of her area through respectful agricultural management; to the capsule manufacturer Guala Closures Ibérica, for implementing more sustainable processes in its facilities that have reduced the CO2 emissions associated with its capsules by 14% since 2020, and in the logistics provider Consum, a cooperative in the distribution sector committed to the continuous improvement of the logistics efficiency of its operations. The jury has especially valued the TEO (Transport at Origin) project implemented by Consum, which optimises times and journeys and represents a significant reduction in CO2 emissions from the entire value chain.
The Torres & Earth award for sustainable territory went to the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, represented by the Director General of the Department of Economic Promotion, Employment, Trade and Tourism of the City Council, Maite de Juan. This recognition focuses on improving the quality of life of citizens thanks to sustainable mobility projects and an urban design committed to green areas and pedestrian and cycling routes, as well as the promotion by the council of Energy Communities as a key instrument for a fair and inclusive energy transition.
Finally, the economist and writer David Lizoain has received the Torres & Earth award for the best communicator in recognition of his career as communicator, collaborator of numerous media and author of books such as 'The End of the First World' and 'Climate Crime', which explicitly warn of the environmental challenges we face.
The president of Familia Torres thanked the winners for their efforts and initiatives and urged them to continue acting to curb the consequences of global warming. "The recent DANA that has taken so many lives and caused such serious damage, is not an atmospheric phenomenon like so many others: we now know that the origin of these anomalies is global warming. Combating climate change is our obligation to future generations. We still have time to stop this madness, if we all react," said Miguel A. Torres.
