Purgatori 2022, the organic wine crafted by Familia Torres in Les Garrigues, has been awarded the title of best wine from Costers del Segre at the fourth edition of the wine competition hosted by this prestigious Lleida-based appellation. The wine secured the gold medal in the aged red wine category and achieved the highest score among all entries.
This year’s competition saw participation from 140 wines and sparkling wines representing 26 wineries, all evaluated in a blind tasting by a panel of approximately thirty sommeliers, oenologists, and industry experts. The awards ceremony was held at the historic Seu Vella in Lleida on Thursday, December 4th, with David Barriche, oenologist at Familia Torres’ Purgatori winery, accepting the accolade.
Marking its tenth vintage, Purgatori 2022 introduces gonfaus to its blend for the first time—a heritage grape variety revived by Familia Torres, noted for its remarkable winemaking potential and adaptability to climate change. This wine is the only one on the market featuring gonfaus, which enhances the garnacha with added character, freshness, and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in cement and stainless steel tanks, followed by aging for 9 to 12 months in partially new French oak barrels and foudres. The result is a Mediterranean-style wine that is both elegant and aromatic, offering a voluptuous and well-balanced palate.
Purgatori 2022 has earned outstanding ratings in leading national and international wine guides, including 94 points from Guía Gourmets, 93 points from Guía Proensa, Vinous, and Wine Enthusiast, and 92 points from Guía Peñin, Wine Enthusiast, and Tim Atkin.
The Costers del Segre wine competition has been held for four years, supported by the Economic Promotion Board of the Lleida Provincial Council and technically coordinated by the Vinari Awards, with the goal of showcasing and elevating the wines of this renowned Catalan wine region.
