El Celler de Can Roca selects Torres wines Grans Muralles and Milmanda for its world tour

25 July 2016

Marimar Estate “Mas Cavalls” and the Chilean wines Estelado and Escaleras de Empedrado will also be served

The Torres family’s wines will travel again this summer with the owners of the prestigious restaurant El Celler de Can Roca - the brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca – on their third world culinary tour, the Cooking Tour Experience. The wines chosen this year are the wines produced by Torres in the Conca de Barberà designation of origin region, Grans Muralles 2004 and Milmanda 2012, as well as Marimar Estate “Mas Cavalls” Pinot Noir 2013 from California, and Escaleras de Empedrado 2012, a Pinot Noir from Miguel Torres Chile, in addition to Estelado (also from Chile), the only rosé sparkling wine produced by the family winery.

The BBVA/El Celler de Can Roca 2016 Tour will take the cuisine of the famous Catalan establishment – considered the second best restaurant in the world for 2016 according to Restaurant magazine – to London, Hong Kong, Phoenix, San Francisco and Santiago de Chile, on a route of more than 42,000 kilometres (26,000 miles). The Torres wines will pair with the culinary creations that the team from El Celler de Can Roca, made up of 40 people, will prepare using local ingredients selected by the Roca brothers on their exploratory trip last spring.

Grans Muralles was born at the foot of the walls that protected the Poblet Monastery from wars and mercenaries in the region of Conca de Barberà. With this elegant and intense wine, the Torres family pay tribute to Catalan wine heritage. The 2004 vintage takes the coupage of the Catalan grape varieties Red Garnacha, Cariñena, Monastrell and Samsó and incorporates the ancestral variety known as Garró. This was the first variety predating the phylloxera blight to be recovered by the Torres family, in a project launched more than 30 years ago that has enabled them to rediscover about 50 lost. Of these, only six currently show great oenological potential.

Milmanda was born in the estate adjoining Grans Muralles. The Torres family’s most emblematic white wine, it is named after the ninth-century castle towering over the family vineyard. Produced with Chardonnay grapes, the wine is aged 12 months on its lees. The 2012 vintage won the gold medal at the Chardonnay du Monde competition in 2014, in addition to other international awards.

Marimar Estate “Mas Cavalls”, produced by Marimar Torres in California, is the wine that will be served in the US cities of Phoenix and San Francisco. This Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast is influenced by the Pacific Ocean’s cool breezes and fog, which help the grapes achieve a greater balance and concentration as well as more refined and elegant aromas.

For the culinary events to be held in Santiago de Chile, the Roca brothers have chosen two Chilean wines produced in the Miguel Torres winery in Curicó. Estelado is a rosé sparkling wine made with Chile’s oldest variety, called País. And Escaleras de Empedrado 2012 is the first Chilean wine to come from slate terraces, produced with Pinot Noir grapes and considered the longest and most laborious wine-making project in Torres history.
