The Torres Family wines Grans Muralles 2004 and Marimar Estate Mas Cavalls 2014 have been chosen by El Celler de Can Roca, one of the world’s top restaurants, for the new gastronomic experience it will be holding in Cancún for charity. In collaboration with the BBVA Bancomer Foundation and Palace Resorts, the three Michelin-starred chef Joan Roca will be putting on two exclusive dinners on May 8 and 9 at the Moon Palace luxury resort on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, to raise funds to rebuild schools damaged by last year’s earthquake in Mexico City.
To perfectly complement the select cuisine and win over the palates of the 120 diners, sommelier Josep Roca has chosen, among others, two Torres Family red wines, with very different origins and profiles: Grans Muralles, from Conca de Barberà, produced using local Catalan varieties, and Marimar Estate Mas Cavalls, from the Sonoma Coast in California, made from Pinot Noir.
Grans Muralles is one of the Torres Family’s most iconic wines, with which it pays tribute to Catalan wine-producing heritage. The 2004 vintage, characterized by colder than normal temperatures, is a blend of indigenous varieties such as Garnacha, Cariñena, Monastrell, Samsó, and Garró, the first Catalan ancestral variety the century-old winery has managed to recover thanks to a project that began over three decades ago. This unique blend, combined with the estate’s stony slate soils, gives the wine character, intensity, and elegance. Its name refers to the walls that used to protect Poblet Monastery and that are still there, at the foot of the vineyards, immune to the passage of time.
Marimar Estate Mas Cavalls 2014, made by Marimar Torres in California, is a delicate Pinot Noir that comes from the eight-hectare Doña Margarita vineyard—named after Marimar’s mother—located on California’s Sonoma Coast. The cool breezes and fogs from the Pacific Ocean, just ten kilometers away, contribute to the optimal development of this grape variety. In addition, the low yields resulting from the high planting density, make the grapes more balanced and concentrated, with refined, elegant aromas. Marimar decided to call this wine Mas Cavalls (horse ranch) in reference to the equestrian center found next to the vineyard.
