The Familia Torres Private Collection: an emotional journey through historic vintages
By: Laura Conde, journalist
Time has its own unique way of transforming wine. That's why there are few things more exciting than opening a bottle that's been laid down for years, or even decades, and discovering how the passage of time has influenced its flavours and aromas. And if the bottle comes from a historic vintage, then it's a real treat for those who see wine as much more than just a delight for the palate: it's also an intellectual pleasure, a way of connecting with a region's history and culture.
Bottles from the Familia Torres Private Collection
The Familia Torres Private Collection, now in its second edition, meets both requirements. It's a limited selection of historic vintages that have been laid down for at least a decade before seeing the light of day again. Each bottle has been meticulously chosen to showcase the elegance and complexity that only years of ageing can reveal.
This new collection brings together four wines that are essential to understanding the history of Familia Torres, references that chart the path taken by the winery in different regions and styles. On the one hand, Mas La Plana, the emblematic Cabernet Sauvignon from the Penedès region that achieved international fame after winning the 1979 Paris Wine Olympics. In this year's Collection it's represented by none other than the 1995 vintage, a particularly good year for the Penedès, producing wines with structure, longevity and good ageing potential. Something that's clearly demonstrated by this red which, once opened, continues to display refinement and freshness, as well as the extensive aromatic development typical of the area's great Cabernets suitable for laying down (known as "de guarda" in Spanish). The 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015 vintages are also available.

It's accompanied by Reserva Real, one of the most remarkable wines from the Penedès, made from a small vineyard planted on slate soils that are exceptionally rare in the region. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and is available in the 2010 vintage (considered one of the best in history) and the 2015 vintage, also noted for its high quality.

The journey continues with Milmanda, a leading Chardonnay in the Conca de Barberà region, born in a historic setting at the foot of the Sierra de Prades hills. With a Burgundy style but a Mediterranean soul, it displays an unusual tension for this type of wine and, once again, extraordinary ageing potential. This is clearly demonstrated by the 2010 and 2015 vintages, both available in the Private Collection, in which Milmanda – undoubtedly one of the great European whites – acquires great complexity with elegant notes of spice, honey, flowers and nuts.

Finally, Grans Muralles is another of the wines with history that are brought together in this Private Collection, produced with diligence and sensitivity (only vintages considered exceptional by the family and its team of experts are included in this limited series). This blend of native grape varieties has become the flagship of the project to reclaim ancestral grapes, initiated by Miguel A. Torres in the 1980s. It's available in its 2005 vintage, in Magnum format, and also in its 2015 vintage.

All the wines in the Private Collection share a fundamental quality: they are pure expressions of their origin, capable of demonstrating how the passage of time polishes, integrates and multiplies their nuances. Even the youngest vintages in this selection, aged for ten years, display an aromatic and gustatory development typical of great wines designed to last.
The Private Collection is aimed at collectors, restaurateurs and wine lovers looking for remarkable, perfectly preserved vintages. Each bottle is presented in a dark wooden case, sealed with wax and accompanied by a ribbon indicating its date of re-release. Detailed information about the wine and its vintage is provided inside, whilst the bottles retain their original labels, each one prepared individually by hand.
Opening any of these bottles, or sharing one with other wine lovers, means much more than just offering a wine: it's an opportunity to savour the past with the excitement of the present and to discover the legacy of Familia Torres.
