Mas de la Rosa Vinyes Velles 2017 (DOQ Priorat), the most exclusive wine from Familia Torres, has achieved the top score in the wine guide Guía de Vinos Gourmets 2021, with 99 points out of 100. With that it joins the so-called Liga 99, consisting of just 20 wines, which the publication describes as “the most outstanding treasures on the Spanish winemaking scene”. 

The tasting committee for this leading guide, consisting of working professionals who include sommeliers, tasters, winemakers and journalists, has blind tasted and marked a total of 3,740 wines. From these, the select group of 20 wines considered to be the best in the 36th edition has been chosen. Mas de la Rosa 2017 shares the podium with three other wines from Priorat, which are the only Catalan representatives. The rest are from the Ribera del Duero, Toro, Rioja, Bierzo, Castilla y León and Jerez designations of origin.

Mas de la Rosa 2017 is the second vintage of this exclusive wine from Priorat, a project led by Miguel Torres Maczassek, from the fifth generation of the Torres family, and the winemaker Jordi Foraster, in a quest for the most hedonistic face of wine. It is a subtle, elegant wine made from old Garnacha and Cariñena vines planted more than 80 years ago on slopes in slatey llicorella soils on slopes known as costers. The 4.7-acre vineyard that gives the wine its name is in a secluded area of great beauty and is documented as one of the first winegrowing estates in Porrera.

The high-scoring wines in the Guía de Vinos Gourmets 2021 also include another of Familia Torres’ leading references, Reserva Real 2016 (DO Penedès), with 98 points, a score it has obtained in the last three editions of the guide. This is a classic style wine made with 40-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot vines from a small vineyard in the Costers de l’Anoia subzone of El Penedès, unique in the region in having llicorella soils.
