Familia Torres presents Vinyarets, a collection of wines that express the diversity and richness of Penedès

04 November 2019

Familia Torres presents Vinyarets, a collection of Penedès wines made from traditional varieties that celebrates the diversity, richness, and unique character of a region whose winemaking history spans millennia. Familia Torres has had a presence in the region since the 17th century and conceived the new range as an homage to the landscape of Penedès. This mosaic of vineyards nestled between the mountains and the sea is full of beautiful enclaves, many of which are still well-kept secrets.

This collection of two wines makes its debut with a red 2018 vintage Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Sumoll blend made from carefully selected vineyards. In terms of winemaking, the emphasis is on soft texture and freshness over concentration. “This is a landscape-inspired wine,” states Miguel Torres Maczassek of the winery's fifth generation, “A wine that conveys the softness of the Penedès landscape, with its hills and mountains, and the excellent work carried out in its vineyards. Vinyarets is made from varieties that have a long tradition in the region, including some lesser-known grapes, to underscore their valuable place in our winemaking heritage and history. Vinyarets is a wine to share with family and friends, an enjoyable wine that celebrates our Penedès.”

Vinyarets wines originate from carefully selected Penedès vineyards of different ages, elevations, and microclimates that grow in different types of soil, with a focus on organic viticulture and high-quality grapes. These well-situated, balanced vineyards – some of which are winery owned, whereas others belong to a dozen or so different winegrowers – provide the ideal conditions for each variety to reach its full potential. Located in the subzones of Alts d’Ancosa – the highest and coldest area in the appellation of origin – Costers de l’Anoia, Turons de Vilafranca, Costers del Montmell, and Vall Bitlles-Anoia, the vineyards total 45 hectares of which the winery then selects the best parcels.

The 2018 vintage was a cool year, with rainfall concentrated in spring and the month of October, right at the end of the harvest. The spring rains kept temperatures relatively mild – although the summer did see a heat spike – which brought about slow, gradual ripening. The result is a nervy, fresh wine with 10 months of partial oak aging that softened its edges while preserving its fruit aromas.

The Vinyarets label features an elegant drawing that depicts old vines with colorful leaves and clusters. Early next year, the collection will add a new wine, a 2019 vintage, white varietal made exclusively from Xarel·lo, the most widely grown grape in Penedès.
