Grans Muralles

Ancestral vines

This wine takes its name from the walls that protected the monastery at Poblet during the Mercenary Wars.

The unmistakeable identity of Grans Muralles is thanks to the stony, slate ground (Licorella) of the region, and the grape varieties used to make it. One century after the phyloxera plague the Torres family have begun to recuperate autoctonous grape varieties believed to be extinct, such as Garró and Querol, using modern viticultural techniques. Together with red Garnacha, Cariñena and Monastrell they create the unique spirit of this wine.

DO Conca de Barberà

La Conca de Barberà is a southern Catalan region measuring 649 km².

Its natural conditions along with its history and traditions make it a privileged area for vine growing and the production of excellent wines. Protected from the sea by the mountains, this designation has been traditionally known for its white wines.  It is located in the southern part of Catalonia between the provinces of Tarragona and Lleida and in the basin of the Francolí and Anguera Rivers.

    Garnacha tinta

The most heavily grown Mediterranean red variety in the world, it produces excellent red and rosé wines which benefit from its greasy and sensual tannin.

    Garnacha tinta
  • 2/5

    Monastrell

A grape that needs a Mediterranean climate for maturation. It produces intense wines with energetic tannins that soften with ageing.

  • 3/5

    Querol

The discovery of another old vine in September of 1998 in Querol, about 40 km northeast of Vilafranca in the Penedès appellation, made it possible to revive a variety that would eventually be named after the town where it was found.

Querol is among the few known varieties that are entirely female. Unlike most vinifera grapevines, its flower is female rather than hermaphroditic. The smaller size of its berries and its organoleptic properties reflect this characteristic.

When young, Querol wines are intense and full of fruit. As they mature in the bottle, they begin to display notes of bay leaf and candied fruit. On the palate, they are concentrated, big and nervy.

Querol brings its fine qualities to Grans Muralles 2009 and 2010: freshness, great length, and excellent acidity, giving the wine its exceptional aging potential.

    Cariñena

A classical and traditional variety from the Mediterranean vineyards. It produces robust wines with a high alcohol content which are rich in pigment and extract.

    Garró

A traditional red grape from the Catalan vineyards which is grown in Conca de Barberà, known for its characteristic scent.
